Habitat's Mission

Habitat for Humanity International was formed in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller as an ecumenical Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing from the world and make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. It is Habitat's vision that every human being has a right to a "decent house in a decent community" and that we are here to give a "hand-up" not a "hand-out" to the disadvantaged by providing decent places for them to live.

The Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity

The Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc. (FAHFH) was founded and affiliated in April 1988. We abide by Habitat International's guidelines but are responsible for our own fundraising, publicity, volunteer/supporter recruiting, staffing and building activities. In the twelve years we have been here, we have built over 48 houses in Cumberland County. We are currently building in Habitat Village on land deeded to us by the city of Fayetteville.

How it works

Through tax-deductible donations of money, materials, land and volunteer labor, Habitat builds houses with the help called "sweat equity" of present and future homeowners. Houses are sold at no profit to carefully selected partner families with non-interest bearing 20 year mortgages. The homeowner's small monthly mortgage payments which include taxes and insurance, are deposited in a revolving fund (called our "Phoenix Fund") which supports the construction of more houses!

Visit the ReStore Warehouse

The ReStore Warehouse is a joint project between FAHFH and Fayetteville Urban Ministry. The ReStore sells donated new and used building supplies at a discounted price. All proceeds from the ReStore go to directly helping both programs.

Hours of operation:
Th & Fri 9:30 - 4:30

Houses are funded in three ways:

1. A house can be sponsored through our Adopt-A-House Program. This program invites churches, businesses, individuals or civic organizations to commit to raise the funds to finance a house (currently $43,600) and organize a group of volunteers to build a house for a family carefully selected by FAHFH. If sponsoring an entire house is out of reach, you can partner with other organizations to sponsor a house.

2. "Phoenix Houses" are built using funds from current homeowner's mortgage payments. When enough money accumulates in our "Phoenix" account we build another house. Currently we are able to start on another "Phoenix" house every 10 months.

3. Volunteer Houses are built using contributions from Habitat supporters. Over 90% of contributions go directly into building additional houses.

How are families selected for a Habitat House?

The FAHFH follows a nondiscrimination policy of family selection. Families are carefully selected based on their level of need, ability to pay and willingness to "Partner" with Habitat. Habitat is not a giveaway program. Homeowners are required to work 400 hours of "sweat equity" helping build their own and other future homeowner's houses.
